If you happen to be a metal band from the Maine/New Hampshire area of the USA, you need to be aware of two things…

First, know that you are within the trifecta of America’s most prolific horror writers. H.P. Lovecraft, Edgar Allan Poe and Stephen King.
Second, If you start a death metal band around that kind of pedigree, hope to the deepest hells that you have the right depravity to fit into that place.

It would appear that the guitarist of ETHEREAL ROT, Brett Horton, believes that this is just the thing that makes metal (and Maine) good… and stuff.
For context, ETHEREAL ROT, the Portland purveyers of putrid parlance, are a band whose sense of independence is bordering on the psychotic. There is no label nor manager in sight, and it was a series of DMs that Mr. Horton coerced me toward this curated collection of cacophonous calls to cathartic cruelty, and I’m glad he did.

Technical death metal is all good and dandy, but sometimes I need a bit of worn in grime with my technical wizardry.

This is where we get to the nitty gritty…

ETHEREAL ROT, both band and album sound like a shift has occurred since the 2023 EP, Cadaverine Skies. With a couple of members joining since, the blackened death has been pulled back a bit to allow some progressive elements to enter the fray.

With their eponymous debut, the stark shift is clearly immediately. THE BECKONING CONTAGION is chock full of tech tricks that gives their blackened stance (albeit subtly) a sinister presence.
With debut albums, it is often expected that older, fan favourite songs are included. THAT WHICH DWELS is the only carry over and it has been given some extra attention here that hits a pretty sweet spot.

Coming through a miasma of oppressive, eldritch themes, the tracks OPHIDIAN WOMB and FESTUM TERRAE enter the ears with morbid intent. Thick with a solid wall of drumming while the guitar work crafts its twisted mosaics.

The highlight of the album comes penultimately with TRANSVERSING THE COSMIC PLAINS. Eerie yet intriguing, it sets up the final track brilliantly. An almost psychedelic piece that lets the bass shine. What can I say? My dad fed me on prog and it stuck.

The finale comes with INTO THE NAUGHT. This is the album’s modus operandi, the sum of all parts formed into this progressive example of a band pushing themselves to the fullest.

ETHEREAL ROT (the band) seem to have tapped into something that broadens the appeal without losing the essence of what maintains their niche, while ETHEREAL ROT (the album) is a glorious example of nasty monstrosities, heightened by well crafted writing and maniacal playing.

A terrifying leap into the abyss that does not shy from exposing what lurks within. There is no fall into doom on this album, it is a flight into a universe that only the northeast of the USA can conjure. What horrors await and what pleasure comes of it are of the same cloth here.

ETHEREAL ROT will release their eponymously titled album on the 17th of July independently on all major streaming sites.
