The lovely people at DC SOUND ATTACK sent me a preview copy of the new EP by Midland’s maniacs SUFFER, and it would be remiss of me not to share some thoughts…

In the Midlands of England, and just up the road from Birmingham, lies Wolverhampton.
Home of the now legendary venue, KK’s Steel Mill, classic bands such as Slade and Cloven hoof, and also for new trailblazers The Black Hounds and the subject of this article, SUFFER (UK).
Relatively new (forming in 2018), and after some shuffles in the lineup, the deathcore five piece are about to drop their second EP, SORROW FROM FLESH, which bookends the debut album, The Sorrow We Sow, The Hatred We Know (2022).
What is notable about this release is how little the music changes despite the band’s personnel replacements.

It begins with the instrumental, III. The intro piece and its maudlin build up into distorted stabs encapsulates what is to follow. This is where the lead single PENDULUM OF VENGEANCE (First reviewed back in March. See HERE) finds its context and nothing has changed about its impact or in the enjoyment hearing it. Finally getting to listen to this high gain, low tuned blend of blast and beatdown in its natural surroundings gives the track more depth and impetus.

Later on, SELF IMMOLATION provides a dark, oppressive piece that is highlighted by the moments of groove that permeate the themes of self loathing taking on physical forms. Like any classic body horror story, the song gets under the skin in an abundance of nasty beats and melodic backing leads. This song, like the others, offer moments of apathy among the confessions of a self destructive psyche.

The second single from the EP is SOUL FROM FLESH, and it was one that slipped under my radar… until now.
In a way, I’m glad it did as I get to hear it with fresh ears and clear opinion. A study into more psychological torment that is reflected in the schizophrenic musical approach.
Dancing between grindcore, groove, to deeper, more sinister tones, it would appear that inner turmoil makes for some impressive musical expression. The blackened slow down in the final minutes is gloriously brutalist before a final flirt with, possibly, the sickest riff on the whole package.

Continuing the frigid, frozen theme, DESOLATED DREAMS, the EP closer, is a blackened and twisted state of affairs that delves into the destructive pattern of finding unattainable perfection. A filthy, slamming tune filled with plenty of riffage to slam to.
The sudden and brief moment of dead air before the breakdown speaks volumes, adding to the song’s already infectious attitude.

For the sake of transparency, and maybe an admittance of my age, deathcore sits in an uncomfortable place for me. Although, with the new breed of bands coming up in the UK offering very interesting ways to explore the genre, there is hope to be had for those open to a changing world.
Apart from that, SUFFER (UK) and SOUL FROM FLESH(EP) offer much more than one could be comfortable with.
