Where have I been all my life, under a rock?
That’s not particularly true. I did, at one point, give their cracking 2011 album, Goat, a few spins way back in the day, but never delved deeper than that.
Shame on me, as NUNSLAUGHTER have been doing this since 1987 and have a discography longer than a prog rock keyboard solo. Even more amazing is that SATANIC CHAOS LEGIONS is their sixth studio album, with splits and live LPs making a huge chunk of their output.

Well, we’re here now and there are fourteen tracks of christian baiting death metal to peruse.
Straight away, from the opening title track onwards, this is a breakneck barrage of blasphemous blasts.

While a part of me may crack a cynical smile at such song titles as JESUS FUCKING DIES, ROTTEN MESSIAH, LUCIFER THE LIGHT and CATHEDRAL OF STENCH, it is nigh on impossible to deny that the tracks are far more than pantomime or shock dressing. There lies a great amount of proficient and highly enjoyable classic death metal afoot. The riffs are catchy, the beats are fulfilling and the vocal structures are punctual.

Conversely, if you removed the antichrist anecdotes, you dismiss the very point of both NUNSLAUGHTER and their ethos.
There is no rallying the troops for devil worship, these are lyrics that set the scenes being bought to life by the music.
From the slow dread of PEUKHARIST, through the epic strokes on the follow up, IN THE FLAMES OF INFERNO, up to the straight up, anti-evangelist protest of LISTEN TO THE LIES, the devil is in the detail, in all its explosive, explicit ways.

I must applaud NUNSLAUGHTER. Many a band that approaches “Devil music” in death metal lately have a blackened, symphonic or epic sentiment, as if the subject matter is to be taken seriously. Whereas, with SATANIC CHAOS LEGIONS, NUNSLAUGHTER walk the middle ground. Expressive enough for the point to come across, yet entertaining enough to enjoy, like a well made horror movie.

It doesn’t matter where in the satanic spectrum you put yourself or your soul (if you’re into that), whether you keep a bible in a pool of blood so none of its lies affect you, or if you Woe Earth and Sea, for the Devil sends the beast with wrath, there is a lot to get into on this album.
