A review by Gioia –
London thrash metal group Day 40 return with PHENOMENON, their long awaited second full length album, and the result is a relentless display of speed, aggression, and melody that proves the band has lost none of its fire during the twelve year gap since Only The Stones Remain.
“Tunguska” kicks things off with a furious burst of thrash metal drumming. From the very first seconds, it feels made for the pit. The pace rarely slows down, keeping the energy high throughout, while the chant driven middle section adds a great sing along moment that is sure to work well live.
“Lunar Enigma” is another thrash metal highlight. The song moves at a great pace and the drums are tight and powerful throughout. It is a fast and direct track that shows the band’s strengths.
One of the standout tracks is “Tyrant of Syracuse”. The song has an epic feel while staying true to the band’s fast thrash style. A long, driving riff carries the song forward. It gets a little repetitive at times, but the energy keeps you hooked until the end.

“Slaves” is another highlight, opening with a protest style intro and sirens before moving from a slower, heavier mood into a full speed assault. The message is clear, encouraging people to open their eyes, stand up, and fight back.
“Dropa Stones” offers a welcome change of pace, blending a hypnotic acoustic atmosphere with excellent guitar work to create one of the album’s most surprising and enjoyable moments.
Closing track “The Great Deluge” is pure thrash metal from start to finish. With its relentless speed and energy, it feels built for circle pits, walls of death, and crowdsurfers. It never slows down and ends the album on a high note.
Overall, PHENOMENON is packed with energy, strong riffs, and plenty of memorable moments. Having seen Day 40 live, I can say the same energy comes across on stage. This is a solid thrash metal album that fans of the genre should definitely check out.
