Review – Suicide Watch – Become The Storm (Single)

When a band that have been around since the early 2000’s, have people like Ian Glasper as alumni and they start to release new material… then you need to take notice – Neil Cook has a read of the Suicide Watch Contract In Blood section and checks out their new single…

Let’s start with the art for this class single from SUICIDE WATCH, “Become The Storm” because it is excellent. The approach of menacing, monstrous, bestial thunderhead creature fantastically rendered darks and greys lit by the red of the setting sun over the unsuspecting cityscape and a most excellent old-school Thrash Metal logo, loving it!

A quick bio.  Formed in 2004 in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, a perfect home for a politically-charged Thrash/Crossover band, it being the home of GCHQ, the big brother spooks who listen to everything! Well, I like to think that the Civil Servant who got to listen to this thunderous shouty beast has either renounced his job prying into our lives, or is lying in a fetal position with blood coming from every orifice.  The band have been through a few changes of personnel over the years, whilst maintaining its core, what band hasn’t, and has produced a couple of albums, and live albums, plus a few EPs, the last being 2018’s excellently titled “Thrashing Like It’s 1986”.  The plan for the band is to put out some new music and get out there live in ’24.  “Become The Storm” is a prime example of that new music.

What we have here is a minute and a half of pure Thrash Metal in a heads-down, no nonsense style.  Snarling vocals, pounding drums, banging bass-runs and angry as feck guitars are relentless whilst there.  A short, sharp, and furious blast.  Sometimes all that is needed, no frills, no nonscience, just hard and fast and done, which can be really satisfying.  Well, that is what I tell the Mrs…Sorry oversharing again!

Become The Storm is out on all streaming platforms from the 1st July 2023, keep an eye on the bands Facebook for the details
