Thrash/Metalcore
UK

Released 20th February, 2026

Maybe it’s because I’m old, or maybe I’m looking at it all wrong but, considering metalcore has been with us for a quarter of a century, you would think I’d have it pinned down.

Take SYLOSIS, for instance, and excuse the ramble, if you will. The Berkshire beserkers had a nifty thrash thing going on that got progressively more progessive with each subsequent album. I’ve used the term “modern metal” a number of times as a noun, but every new release is, by definition modern, be it thrash, death, alt, stoner… where’s the line?

THE NEW FLESH is the latest album from SYLOSIS, and I’d put this album into that category. I’d rather not, but labels will label (not record labels, that’s a whole other rant). Like their old regular touring mates Trivium, it fits the description. As much as the term “metalcore” seems to upset the more vocal purist, the term is the amalgimation that works best.

The album then, the successor to 2023s A Sign Of Things To Come, and their seventh studio full length, is 11 tracks of modern thrash metal… core?
Well, it would appear that thrash is definitely back on the menu, along with a bit of death metal on BENEATH THE SURFACE. Double time drumming with the guitars synched in with the rhythm beckon a powerful entrance, and Josh Middleton’s voice sounding on point from the off. Experimentation would appear to be the last thing on their minds as this is one anthemic tirade of intentional anger.

There are moments of clean/dirty vocals on ERASED and they work extremely well with the heavy reverb in the background adding a bit of theatre.
If you want it to go full chat, face first attitude, you are well served on ALL GLORY, NO VALOUR, as well as the Title Track, THE NEW FLESH.
For some brooding menace, LACERATIONS and MIRROR MIRROR has you covered with an almost Slipknot variable.

Production wise, Josh Middleton (the only original member left in the band) has done an outstanding job here with Scott Atkins. There is punch and depth with clarity by the shedload that makes Josh’s lead work shine.

As a metal album, THE NEW FLESH is pretty agreeable listen. The SYLOSIS sound is one that gets them to play the big rooms with some big players and if that means tagging terms like ‘modern’ or ‘core’ to your project, then I see no harm in that.
It’s what you do that’s important, not what you name it.

THE NEW FLESH is out now via Nuclear Blast and available to stream on all major platforms.

Also availble on physical formats on Nuclear Blast’s Website.

Also available as digital download on the SYLOSIS Bandcamp.
